Passive optical network (PON) technologies continue to evolve, bringing faster broadband speeds and advanced services to end users. A key component powering these networks are optical network units (ONUs). This article traces the progression of ONU capabilities, from early GPON ONU to the latest models with Wi-Fi 6 support.

GPON ONU

The initial wave of PON deployments utilized gigabit PON (GPON) technology per the ITU G.984 standard. GPON ONU were designed to deliver up to 2.5 Gbps downstream and 1.25 Gbps upstream. Most were relatively basic, providing 4 Ethernet ports to connect devices via copper cabling.

Early GPON ONU had limited wireless functionality. A few models incorporated 802.11n Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz to provide basic wireless connectivity. However, robust Wi-Fi capabilities were not yet a priority in these early stage ONUs.

CATV ONU

As GPON networks matured, operators began offering bundled voice, data, and cable TV services over fiber. This led to the emergence of combo ONUs with integrated CATV functionality.

CATV ONU added support for RF video overlay along with connectors for coaxial cable. This enabled delivering IPTV and traditional cable TV services through the same device. Having everything consolidated in one ONU simplified installation and was more cost effective.

Wi-Fi Enhanced ONU

Bandwidth usage steadily increased in homes and businesses, driven largely by video streaming, gaming, and smart devices. To address wireless congestion issues, ONUs upgraded to the latest Wi-Fi generations.

802.11ac WAVE 2 provided a major leap forward in wireless performance. Wi-Fi enhanced ONU leveraged technologies like MU-MIMO, multi-user beamforming, and dual 5 GHz radios. This enabled faster Wi-Fi speeds and supported the surge of connected clients.

Wi-Fi 6 ONU

Wi-Fi 6, also known as 802.11ax, represents the newest Wi-Fi standard. GPON ONU with Wi-Fi 6  maximize efficiency with OFDMA modulation, TWT scheduling, and increased MIMO streams. Other enhancements include 1024 QAM and 160 MHz channel width support.

Collectively, these technologies boost throughput and minimize latency. As usage grows, Wi-Fi 6 ONU will capably support dense environments with many concurrent users and devices. For operators, they provide a clear upgrade path as networks transition to XGS-PON and beyond.

Conclusion

ONU capabilities have expanded enormously—from the basic GPON ONU to today’s ultra-high-speed multi-service models. Integrated CATV and powerful Wi-Fi 6 now allow ONUs to reliably deliver a complete digital home experience. Thanks to their continued evolution, ONUs will remain pivotal network elements for many years to come.
